It's rather hard to say without a few more details. Windows Media Player should be able to cope with wmv files but maybe some other program with delusions of grandeur has taken over? Have you tried opening the file in Windows Media Player, rather than double clicking it to run?

Maybe try and uninstall and reinstall and see if that helps.

my guess would be that the wmv files are either password locked, or are DRM controlled.
Are these bootleg vidoes you are trying to watch?
