outlook & 3 dongle
I have bought a 3 dongle for my Toshiba laptop and it will not let me use outlook? have trued changing the server etc but have heard that there may be a driver missing - any info?

RE: outlook & 3 dongle
There isn't a missing 'driver' - if your 3 dongle lets you connect to the internet you can use it to receive your Outlook email messages. Sending messages is a bit more tricky.
There are TWO servers, one for incoming email and one for outgoing email. The one for incoming email should NOT be changed, the one for outgoing email should be smtp-mbb.three.co.uk . Use the default port 25, no SMTP authentication is required (I understand). These settings only work to send email via the three dongle so if you also use a fixed line ISP it is best to set up a second email account to use when sending emails via 3. Alternatively, it may also be possible to use your existing outgoing email server on a different port (i.e. not port 25) but only if your provider has this facility.

1) speak to planethosts NOT your IT guy as they will have seen this problem before and will know the settings need to authenticate you properly 2) if they can't fix it then you're going have to send using "3"s SMTP servers, using a 3 e-mail account, with the return address set as the

RE: outlook & 3 dongle
I see this problem quite a lot. A client goes to a web designer who sets up a domain for them with email and a web page (presumably www.angushomescyprus.com in Lorraine's case) but the email is actually hosted by another contractor (presumably http://www.theplanet.com/ here). Web Designer A may be good at web design but doesn't know much about how Host B's email system works so the poor client gets into this sort of difficulty.
As Jon says, it looks as if your IT Guy may know how to make web pages look good but he doesn't seem to know how to solve email problems. So you must either go to www.theplanet.com or hire another IT Guy or Gal to do this for you. The IT Guys and Gals at PCIQ specialise in making computers work so one of us should be able to do this job if you like.

RE: outlook & 3 dongle
I set up a t-mobile dongle for a client quite recently. Overall the Internet service seemed rather erratic but email (Outlook Express) worked okay, receiving from Orange but sending via the t-mobile SMTP server. The only problem was that one email provider (BT, I think) refused to accept email sent from t-mobile because they had been blacklisted.

RE: outlook & 3 dongle
I think the problem with BT is more convoluted than a simple blacklist: you actually have to go into the BT account settings on their servers (via their webmail client) and specifically enable the t-mobile or 3 or whatever smtp servers as "authorised" to send on your account Its messy, very messy

RE: outlook & 3 dongle
Whilst you are correct, Jon, that's not what I am saying. Any messages my client tried to send to someone with a BT email address were bounced back undelivered. The automated message from BT implied they had blacklisted t-mobile.

RE: outlook & 3 dongle
I have used Alan B's suggested settings in Outlook on my Sony laptop and I am pleased to say that it works. Be patient with the first test message at it takes a couple of minutes to send after that you are at the mercy of the speed of your connection. Thank you Alan most helpful, I spent many hours previously trying different methods.

RE: outlook & 3 dongle
Fixed it. Couldn't understand how to have 2 different SMTPs in place. You don't need to. I changed the port from 25 to 26 in Outlook and did nothing else. It all works on the dongle and also when I connect at the office as well. It may work for you depending on your ISP?

RE: outlook & 3 dongle
P.M. I think you have just struck lucky in that your email provider uses port 26 as an alternative to SMTP port 25. But that's useful to know; it would be more useful if you identified your email provider.

RE: outlook & 3 dongle
port 26 usually gets used when SMTP has to be authenticated by the server, so I assume you've got authentication turned on?

something I discovered this week while trying to get an iPad to work on Orange with a third party mail provider was that Orange block port 25 to prevent spam relays. I wonder if 3 are doing the same?

RE: outlook & 3 dongle
I've been using Three for years, and I can use any POP or SMTP email as I like (with both my own domains and things like gmail and yahoo), with and without SSL, through Thunderbird and Seamonkey. I have never used Three's SMTP servers, as I never had any need to.
I suspect bad settings or lack of understanding is at the root of the problems here. Or possibly dear old outlook.
As far as I'm concerned, Three blocks nothing, not even when abusing your mobile as a wifi access point for multiple computers!
