it is windows vista. If doing a start up normally there is a blue screen. If you go to start-up repair then the repair fails and comes up with the message 'a breakpoint has been reached etc'. Unfortunately I can't find my back-up CDs so I can't reload windows.

RE: A breakpoint has been reached 0x80000003 at 0x73df7b4a

Packard Bell machines have a hidden recovery partiton. On some you access it through the F8 menu at startup, select "repair my computer" and then choose the factory reset option
On others its a case of
Press "ALT" and "F10" simultaneously during start-up. Continue holding ALT and pressing "F10" at regular intervals as the computer starts. A screen stating "Starting Acer Recovery" will appear, at which point you can stop pressing ALT and "F10."

Then press "2." This option enables you to restore the system from a user-created partition backup. Wait for the computer to recover and reboot.

The actual error you've got is difficult to diagnose without knowing a lot more, but I'd guess at system file corruption caused by a virus. Quite likely the antivirus program itself has been crippled and is stopping the machine from booting.

Can you get it into safe mode from the F8 startup menu? If you can, try system restore

alt F10 created a 'boot logging' screen. pressed 2 for partition? and then it took me to the normal blue screen again.
F8 on start up and 'repair my computer' didn't have 'factory settings restore' option. Can't do a system restore as there are no restore points and it won't let me create any in safe mode.

that makes it sound as if the drive partitioning has been messed up quite badly
Really difficult to advise further without seeing the machine, though suspect a complete reinstalation from DVD may be needed. However there is a chance the hard drive is faulty. Really difficult to know. Rather than spend money trying to fix it yourself I think this is one of those cases where you'd be better off paying to get someone to look at it
