not sure how to define problems-Compaq Armada M700

I have this old laptop iv never really used, but now i want to connect it to my home pc via Roter to share the Virgin internet connection,as my bf hogs the pc.It was originally windows 2000 but at some point i have managed to get it running on windows xp pro,i have just checked the spec and i think the laptop can handle it.the laptop doesnt hold battery charge well but as i can always have the power connected it doesnt bother me but could this be causing other problems? the main bugbear is that that when i run the virgin isp cd and netgear router cd im told there is no ethernet NIC detected. I must have deleted this or sething as i got online in feb 08 wen i had virgin installed using the ethernet cable and modem.(i did not hav the pc at this time).
I think the solution is to check/do something to the BIOS,how do i check everthing is ok there?
then run a disc i have marked 'clean win xp'
i have searched everything i can think of,trying to teach myself how to fix this but i need to know where to start and some basic instruction please...if anyone can help or send me in the right direction please get in touch with me sdcurrie@hotmail.co.uk

the ethernet port is either disabled, faulty, or the drivers are not installed correctly (or are absent)
When you got online earlier, was that with windows 2000 or XP installed?

The weak battery will not cause other problems if the mains adapter is working properly. Jon's answer is correct but taking a guess I would think that you lost the drivers for your ethernet port when you upgraded to Windows XP.

In the Run box type devmgmt.msc to open Device Manager. Is there anything listed there with a red cross or an exclamation mark?

Alan - you double-guessed my response to the hoped-for response to my question.
What you suggest seems most likely, though if WinXP does not have a native driver its presumably either an nVidia chipset or else a gigabit ethernet port.
Anything else would be natively recognised... yet it worked under Win2K. Something doesn't quite add up here...

As Jon said, there is something a little odd going on here - network drivers are usually recognised by Win XP. Having said that - XP never recognises the network card in my Acer without me installing actual drivers. Head to the following link, goto the version of XP you have and download the 'Driver-Network' onto a usb stick or something - see what happens when you install them (may need to restart the laptop). If that doesn't work, I'd advise getting someone to check it out. Could be the network interface is damaged. Its unlikely to be a bios setting gone wrong.

Alternatively, if you have a PCMCIA slot you could get a PCMCIA network adapter to see you over

That's assuming it's an HP.

Sara - we need to know the make and model of your laptop please so that we can find a proper driver for it.

Of course, it helps if I read the title of the posting!

when I follow Nick's link to the correct download page for this model I get "There are no software downloads or drivers for this product."
Seems strange...

If you don't like Nik's link here is a slightly longer one:

Network drivers ARE listed there.
