Enquiry about laptop repair

Hi,
I have sent my laptop off for repair, however they haven't given me a price and have said it is fixed and just in the stages of final testing and then it is going to shipped.
I was just wondering if companies have to tell you the price to fix a laptop before doing the work and you have to agree?
Or if they can just charge you for the work without having to give you a price?
My laptop is under 6 months old. I am just worried that I am going to be charged a fortune.
