Dell mini netbook overheating

Hello,

I have recently bought a refurbished dell mini 10, with a 149gb hd, 1gb ram and it has windows 7 ultimate running on it.er

After an hours use the netbook gets redhot, unlike anything I have experienced before with a netbook. I can only play a avi video file for 30 mins or so before it started to stall and flicker with the sound going out of sync. Webcam judders too.

I have had a netbook before, but never had these problems.

Are there any checks I can do, what would be causing the overheating and the videos not to play properly?

Thanks.

RE: Dell mini netbook overheating

no such thing as a "refurbished" laptop or notebook. You can buy new machines. Or you can buy second-hand machines. Why are they second-hand? Because theres something wrong with them.
These Dell Minis do seem to get hot, and it could be you have one thats worst that most. That probably why it was sold on. Not much you can do about it, short of taking it apart and making sure the cooling vents aren't blocked and that the heat-pipe is correctly fitted to CPU/GPU with thermal paste.
My advice? Reject it as faulty, take it back to the shop and get your money back. Its not fit for purpose

RE: Dell mini netbook overheating

PS - If it has Windows Ultimate running on it I'd be very very worried. These normally come with Win7 Starter edition. Anything with Ultimate on it has to be regarded as potentially bootleg. Which does beg the question - if it has been reloaded by a bootlegger, maybe they forgot the necessary motherboard drivers and power management software - which could cause a heating problem

RE: Dell mini netbook overheating

I did a lot of work for a supplier of Dell mini's. They were seeing a high return rate due to over heating, they called me in to inspect some of them.

The results were that there was not enough thermal paste between CPU and heatpipes.

If you are able to I would return it for refund/exchange. Otherwise it needs to be sent to a repairer to be sorted.
