Computer Spontaneously Restarts

I'm working on a computer that spontaneously restarts. NOT the normal Windows (XP) problem where a critical error (B.S.O.D.) triggers an automatic restart. Automatic restart on system failure is off and there is nothing in the event log. This is more like a brief power failure. The frequency of spontaneous restarts gets greater as the computer warms up. Has anybody else seen this and found out what caused it?

How far does it get before it reboots? If its before Windows starts up then try unplugging RAM, HDD etc and see if it still happens?

If it happens after Windows has started have you tried enabling boot logging and seeing if that give any info?

RE: Computer Spontaneously Restarts

Thanks, Richard. The restarts are seemingly random. The first time may be fifteen minutes after the computer has been on (so with Windows up and running). Thereafter they come faster until eventually it gets to the point when Windows will not start.

RE: Computer Spontaneously Restarts

can be many things, faulty PSU, overheating CPU, badly seated memory / cards, failing capacitors or even just a bad combination of drivers
However the last one I had doing this was cured by a hotfix - checking the Event History for "System" in windows management showed an error, which linked to a Technet page which offered a Hotfix download. May not be the cause in your case, but its worth checking the Event Manager to see if there are any clues there

RE: Computer Spontaneously Restarts

just a PS to this - open the machine up and see how much dust / dirt / cat or dog hair is in there, especially around the cooling vent for the PSU and the CPU heat sink & fan, and the graphics card cooler fan (if there is one)
