If you still have problems after you've finished trying everything then post again and list the things you have already tried. Assuming you have the connections correct it is usually a matter of reloading the sound drivers after thoroughly removing the old ones. I was dealing with this problem on a client's computer last week and it took about five attempts but I did eventually succeed.

laptop or tower? internal or external speakers? old or new? do other speakers work And - as Alan asks - just what have you tried?

Have you checked the mixer settings?, Double click the sound icon on the right hand side of the taskbar. Is it "muted"? Are any of the channels muted? Just a thought.
