Generally this is because the battery on the motherboard that runs the memory that holds machine's basic settings has run out. This would be unusual if the machine is relatively new, but they all run out eventually. Some of these batteries can just be clipped out and replaced, others need a soldering iron, but either way a competent hardware engineer could probably switch it out in half an hour or so and the batteries themselves are only a few quid. Hope this helps.
I have decades of experience in computer system and network design and while I'm quite familiar with Microsoft Windows, my company specialises in Open Source systems like Linux, Apache, Open Office, Firefox, Thunderbird etc.
So if you have a ghost in your machine or if you want your system reviewed and updated, we can help you.
The company charges out my time by the minute, so if you just need to double check something and spend 5 minutes on the phone, that's all you'll be charged for.
