stuart i totally agree with you! i usually fix this error with a bart pe bootdisk there are several tools included that resolve this error. this can most definatly also be done with a recovery console with a windows xp disk and if i think for one second there is a fault with the hard disk ill then run a level 5 scan with spinwrite that fix's most issues with hard disks, and in this case it is rarely the hard disk. there are lots of people out there who will potentially sell a customer a hard disk because they haven't got the knowledge to resolve a simple issue like this! formatting is simply the easy and lazy way out when id personally rather fix the issue at hand within minutes with no data loss!
