Sounds like you were possibly sold an (old ?) OEM version of XP Pro. Was it in celophane ? The XP serial number is normally on an adhesive sticker with the MS laser logo in the wrapper. Otherwise it's normally attached/stuck to the "new" PC. If you try to install from the CD which I guess you do have and try to put it on your laptop you will have problems registering it with Microsoft. If your laptop has XP home on it you cannot use that serial number. You have effectively purchased something you cannot use. Hope you didn't pay too much.
