Simon provided most excellent customer service - an ingenious result - just a pity that the machine can't be totally fixed but I do have a method of using it.

RE: Windows XP

Sounds like you were possibly sold an (old ?) OEM version of XP Pro. Was it in celophane ? The XP serial number is normally on an adhesive sticker with the MS laser logo in the wrapper. Otherwise it's normally attached/stuck to the "new" PC. If you try to install from the CD which I guess you do have and try to put it on your laptop you will have problems registering it with Microsoft. If your laptop has XP home on it you cannot use that serial number. You have effectively purchased something you cannot use. Hope you didn't pay too much.

An IT professional for 20 years I provide proven support for PC, Windows server and general networking for small businesses and home users. My career started with British Rail in the 70's and my last role working for a company in Liss in Hampshire supporting small businesses has now led me down the sole-trader path. My rates are below the market norm and the quality of my work is excellent.
