RE: D: is not a valid win32 application

This is a little off topic but just wanted to add a comment about the SP2 and SP3 issues. I have Installed SP2 on hundreds of machines since it was released and not had one issue. However, I have had customers how have reported problems following a SP2 and SP3 installtion. In my experience SP2 & SP3 problems are usually caused when customers install the SP on an already unstable system with virus, spyware or other software/hardware related issue. Every system I personally have done the install on have either been rebuilt due to hardware issue or have recently had system errors repaired or virus/spyware removed and SP's have gone on sweet as a nut.

RE: Administrator Problem

What Operating System is she using? What is her login user name, is it actually 'administrator' or is she just login in with a admin enabled account? Is the PC part of a domain?

RE: Start-up screen

Richard I don't think anyone was under the impression any 'bickering' was going on until you suggested it. We are simply responding to each others suggestions and comments to clarify the situation, identify exactly where the problem is and come up with a suitable resolution. I for one wasn't aware that the Themes in XP could change the boot splash screen. Follwoing Jon's comments I then looked into this more closely and found that if a person modifies the NTOSKRNL.exe using freely available software then resetting the theme will not help. I don't understand how you interpret this as bickering.

RE: Start-up screen

Jon, the problem is that if it is the Windows XP logo that's been replaced it will depend how he achieved this. If he downloaded a new theme and customised the image then fine, resetting the theme will change the logo back to XP. However, if he used software to modify the NTOSKRNL.exe file then resetting the theme is unlikely to help as to my knowledge all the standard windows themes share the same file. There is another option. By modifying the boot.ini file you can disable the boot image completely. However, by doing this you will see the post messages at the begining and then just a black screen until windows loads, this means that you won't see any other warnings or messages such as windows trying to run check disk etc.

RE: Start-up screen

Sorry Jon but I think you are the one 'missing the point'. Changing the Themes does nothing more than change the wallpaper and the colour scheme etc and Sarah has already established that it's not the desktop background as the image is only displayed for a few seconds when the PC is turned on. Also I've already explained how to change the desktop wallpaper as well as disabling the image displayed by the bios on startup.

RE: Start-up screen

Sorry Sarah was posting while you posted your reply. Have you gone into the set-up (usually F2 or Delete) to see if there's an option to remove or at least disable the boot image. Be careful about changing things in the BIOS though unless you know what your are doing as you could cause further problems. Just look through the options and it should be obvious it will say something like display logo or boot image. If you don't have any luck let me know what the BIOS type is if you can otherwise let me know the make and model of the laptop is so I can find out what BIOS it uses.

RE: Start-up screen

Update: I've assumed that you are using XP but if you are using Vista then the process is a little different. Step1: Click on the start menu, then select Control Panel. Step2: Click the 'Personalization' icon Step3: Click 'Desktop Background. From there it's self explanitory, choose a pre-loaded image or browse your own pictures. If you prefer not to have any image, select Solid Colors from the drop down and just choose a background colour.

RE: Start-up screen

Hi Sarah If it is at the computer start-up as you believe then the image would only be displayed for a few seconds while the computer is booting. If this is the case then you may be able to stop the image being displayed by entering the computers set-up screen and disabling the feature. However, it is more likely that he has set up an image as your windows desktop background as setting up a custom image to be displayed in the bios is not for the amateur and the graphics at that point in the computers start up would only allow for low quality images. If the images is displayed all the time you are using the computer then this is your desktop background image or 'Wallpaper' and can easily be removed. Step1: Click on the Start menu button. Then click on Settings and then on Control Panel. Step2: Double-click on the Display icon or text link. This will open a window named Display Properties. Step3: Click on Background. Click on one of the items that appear in the box labeled Wallpaper. Step4: Inspect the preview that appears above the Wallpaper menubox. Use the Display menu to the right to experiment with tiling, stretching or centering the picture that you are previewing. Step5: Click OK to change your background. If you want to use another image or photo then after Step3 Click on Browse to use an image stored elsewhere on your hard drive. Locate the image and click Open.

RE: keyboard trouble

Hi Angie The first thing we need to establish is whether this is a hardware or software issue. Can you turn the laptop on and when you get the initial screen (might be manufacturers logo or just some white writing on black background) just keep repeatedly pressing the F8 button. If this works then you should be given an option to load windows into safe mode. Before selecting safe mode, try using the up and down arrow keys to select various options in the list. If this works then we can assume at this point that the keyboard is working (or at least those keys we can try). Now let the laptop boot into safe mode and choose to load system restore when prompted. To do this click 'No' when the message appears, do not click 'Yes' this will load you into safe mode without system restore. Once into safe mode, system restore will load, choose the option to restore to an earlier time and you will be presented with a calendar showing available restore points, choose a date prior to when this problem first appeared. Follow the wizard and click finish. Now just let your computer restart and once back into windows test the keyboard. Let me know how you get on. Regards Mike B

RE: how do you enable the wireless holding fn & f8 doesn't do anything do i need to load a disc for my

Update to last post. Tom I am assuming you have XP as you have not stated what operating system you are using. If you have no luck with above please come back with model number of laptop.

RE: how do you enable the wireless holding fn & f8 doesn't do anything do i need to load a disc for my

Tom If you have a home hub then the wireless should be preconfigured and the WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol) Key will be printed on the back or underside of the router. Check that your wireless adaptor is not disabled. You should have a 'My Network Places' icon on your desktop, if not it will be in the start menu. Right click the icon, Click 'Properties'. You should see at least two entries in the window that opens, e.g Local Area Connection, Wireless Connection. On the wireless connection (assuming it is there) does it say disabled? You might have to change the view to 'Details' in order to see this information. If it is disabled double click (left mouse button) on the icon and this will enable the connection. If no wireless connection exists the adaptor may be disabled and you will need to go to device manager to enable it. Right click 'My Computer', click 'Manage' Click 'Device Manager'. Check under 'Network Adaptors' for your wireless adaptor and make sure it's enable and it doesn't have a yellow exclamation mark on it.

RE: my mac won't start

Just one thing, before purchasing a new hard drive you need to confirm that it is the hard drive that's making the noise and this is the fault. Easiest way to do this is to remove the drive and power on the Mac, it still won't boot but the noise should be gone.

RE: my mac won't start

Hi Anna I'm not a Mac expert but from what I do know about them this sounds like a hard drive issue. The folder (I believe) is displayed on a grey screen on startup when the Operating System or hard drive canot be located. This coupled with the noise you are hearing leads me to believe it's the hard drive. If you are confident and replacing the drive or know someone who is and you have the recovery disk or Mac OS disk then you can purchase a new drive and fit it yourself. Alternatively if you are not confident with doing that then you really need to take it to a Mac service centre to get it repaired. Saying that, if it's 10 years old it might be time to put it to rest. Regards Mike

RE: how do you enable the wireless holding fn & f8 doesn't do anything do i need to load a disc for my

Jon With regards to setting the router up it depends on who the ISP is. If he has a router supplied by either BT or Orange (I'm sure there are others that do this as well) the wireless will come pre-configured.

RE: Advent 7103 laptop screen not working

Before you start dismantling the laptop can I suggest that you connect the laptop to an external monitor? You should have a standard monitor connector on the laptop, just plug a friends (or any monitor you can get hold of) into your laptop. You may have to restart the laptop for it to detect (assuming it's on when you plug it in) also you may need to activate the second screen by pressing the function key and F4 or F5.

Already submitted a reply about 45mins ago but now it seems to have disappeared. Anyway, same question as John but also please specify model not just the make.

RE: Packard Bell Recovery DVDs

Hi Colleen, well there seems to be an issue with the recovery software that PB is aware of and they've released a patch for it. Download and install this before you go spending more money on new DVD's. The link is below. support.packardbell.com/uk/item/index.php?i=7442760000&pi=platform_orion_a Also just to clarify, the SJ51 does support both + and - formats. However, from what I gather Kodak do not manufacture the DVD's (although they are usually made by a reputable company) and according the Kodak's own website they are not compatible with all versions of DVD-R drives, there are actually four versions of DVD-R drives and Kodak disks are comatible with 3 of them. Unfortunatley I'd be surprised if even PB tech support could tell you which version drive you have. If the patch doesn't work try purchasing disks manufactured by a quality brand like Verbatim. Regards Mike

RE: Packard Bell Recovery DVDs

Hi Colleen, just noticed that you already stated that they are Kodak DVD-R disks so this could be the problem. If your laptop only supports +R then your disks won't work.

28 Apr @ 13:08

RE: Packard Bell Recovery DVDs

Ian, as Colleen stated she is following the instruction on the PB Easynote laptop to create the recovery disks so I think it goes without saying that she is using the DVD burning software supplied with the notebook and not trying to copy and paste. Colleen, I have done a bit of further investigation for you on this and as far as I can tell Packard Bell laptops (the latest ones anyway) only seem to support DVDRW + R9 (DVD+R DL (also called DVD+R9) is a Dual Layer writeable DVD+R). You should be able to use DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD+R DL and DVD+RW DL. Without knowing the specific model you have it is not possible for me to say for sure but if your laptop only supports the + format make sure you are not using DVD-R's.

28 Apr @ 13:05

RE: Packard Bell Recovery DVDs

Kodak should be fine. Check that the DVD drive is a multi-format drive as well, meaning that it supports both DVD-R and DVD+R. I'd be surprised if it wasn't but it's worth checking. It will usually say on the DVD drive itself what it supports. Any problem, let me have the exact model number and I can check that out for you.

RE: Packard Bell Recovery DVDs

Hi Colleen. This could be the result of several issues. Firstly it could be the blank DVD's themselves. Are you using 'Budget' DVD's? If you are, these are what we refer to as 'coasters' because that's all they're any use for due to their extremely high failure rate. Obtain a pack of high quality recordable DVD's such as TDK, Verbatim or Imation. Secondly it could be a drive or software problem. I would suggest trying to burn some files to a blank DVD with the DVD burning software. Try to make sure it's a large amount of data to fully test the burn process, 1 or more files up to about 4GB worth of data, it doesn't really matter what files you choose as this is just to test the drive and the software. Let us know how you get in with these steps and then we'll take it from there. Kind Regards Mike Barnes
