RE: blue screen

Sharon, Why were you so sure that there was something on your computer that you went as far as getting a dodgy copy of some antivirus? A PC slowing down is usually down to a build up of startup files and hard disk problems.

RE: Cant upgrade

You need a Windows Vista CD to do an upgrade.

RE: Dr.Watson crashing my machine

Dr Watson is the result of the crash, not the cause and is built into all versions of Windows. You will need to tell us more about explorer crashing. Any error messages? etc

RE: I did have free AVG but have been given Spybot search and destroy, when trying to open it it keeps s

Nope, no disagreeing. Just pointing out that it may have been AVG antispyware she was trying to replace rather than the antivirus software.

RE: avg problem

Robin - there is a paid-for version of AVG as well. Michelle - If you right-click on the AVG icon down beside your clock and select 'start' does the program start? If the icon is not there then you will need to reinstall whichever version you had.

RE: I did have free AVG but have been given Spybot search and destroy, when trying to open it it keeps s

Robin - AVG do a separate antispyware product as well as their antivirus software and have done for a long time.

RE: I did have free AVG but have been given Spybot search and destroy, when trying to open it it keeps s

Hi Michelle, I would forget about spybot - it's not as good as it used to be. Uninstall it then do an internet search for a price of software called superantispyware (which is free), download and install it.

RE: when i turn on comp it says cd rom not found floppy not found then windows loads on but it only gets

If it is really slow in safe mode then I would hazard a guess that there is some corruption on your hard disk. Either way, It's probably best if you get the machine looked at professionally before you lose anything important to you.

RE: when i turn on comp it says cd rom not found floppy not found then windows loads on but it only gets

Agree with Jon here. Carol - once it gets to the 'welcome' screen what happens? Does is restart automatically or does it just hang?

RE: Remove windows 2000

Depending on wether you have an OEM or A microdoft version of XP, you may be able to do an upgrade. Insert your CD and it will either give you the option to upgrade or new install. If it gives you the new install option ONLY then you have an OEM version of XP and you should stop and backup any documents etc that you want / need.

Hi Sophie, Your best bet to find a Toshiba repair centre would be your local PC World store.

It sounds like the power supply or motherboard is dead. you will need to get someone to look at it.

Or go into the control panel and then click on 'keyboard'. If Toshiba have installed their own keyboard software then there may be a setting in there for the programmable buttons.

RE: Outlook refuse to send emails. Also, Webpages disappear.

The only thing I can think of is that Outlook is using Word as its email editor and somehow it is corrupt. Try doing a search for a file called normal.dot and delete it. Can you then send email?

It can also be a driver, a program trying to startup that can't or a system service. Place a call through this site to get it looked at professionally.

RE: Mac won't boot.

Try pressing and holding down the shift key from switch on. This will bypass any software that automatically starts up. Does the Mac boot okay with the shift key pressed?

RE: No internet Wireless working and seen

Andrew, as Alan suggested, it sounds as if it could be ZoneAlarm. Uninstall the software and let us know the result please.

17 Aug @ 17:24

RE: Cant start windows

not only the hardware but system files and the registry can be corrupted by an interruption.... If you did a fresh install before it fell over then I'm afraid you'll be quicker doing another one.

17 Aug @ 14:25

RE: Drivers

Visit the PC manufacturers website and you will be able to get the drivers from there. Sound, video and / or network drivers are the one's that usually need updated when a fresh install is done.

That's not good... Without a Win XP CD there is very little that can be done. If you can get hold of one then follow these instructions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341

RE: Gets to the Windows XP home edition loading page then restarts.

Hi Oliver, You are a wee bit out of my area. What options do you have in the startup menu?

16 Aug @ 11:17

RE: Gets to the Windows XP home edition loading page then restarts.

The 'automatically restart on error' must be enabled on your computer. Switch on your computer and repeatedly press F8 until you see the start-up menu. Choose 'disable automatic restart' and let your computer restart. You will now be greeted with a blue screen and an error message. Can you tell us what it says?

RE: PC has spyware/viruses

I would treat Jon's answer as the final step if nothing else works. Try superantispyware first and then see what the results are.

15 Aug @ 23:36

RE: PC has spyware/viruses

Agreed with Alan and I will add, once you have sas installed and updated restart your computer in safe mode and then run the scan with both sas and nod32. The reason why nod couldn't delete the two files is because they where being used. Starting up and scanning in safe mode should prevent them from being loaded and allow them to be deleted.

Hi Bill, The internal mouse and external mouse have different connections within the laptop so.... If you want the built in moouse repaired then the whole keyboard needs to be replaced - rough cost inc labour £130 External mouse - what happened to it between it working and then dying? If you unplug it and then replug it in does it work? Can you try another mouse in its place? If you have tried other mice and they don't work either (and you are 100% positive that the mice DO work on another computer) then you are looking at having to replace the logic board. This will cost you approx £650 (new) or £600 (exchange) excluding labour.

For both the Mac and the PC, you can Retrospect which will do what you require.

RE: I have iMac G5. When I checked my HD by disk utility it says:

Yes, the old drive can be cloned to the new drive so that your applications, settings etc are copied over too. Without seeing the hard drive errors that you have at the moment I can't honestly say what the outcome would be. Northumberland? Well, it just so happens that I know who you'll end up with if you do place a call with PCIQ ;-)

12 Aug @ 16:07

RE: I have iMac G5. When I checked my HD by disk utility it says:

The message means that the hard drive has some corruption's on it but should easily repairable. Go to the PCIQ front page and place a call through them. Assuming that the hard drive isn't ready to die then your probably looking at an hour to sort it. If the hard drive is ready to die then expect to pay for a replacement hard drive, reinstalling of OS X and copying of data (documents, photos, music etc) onto the drive. This could take a few hours to do. It all depends on how much you value your data. Which part of the country are you in?

12 Aug @ 15:26

RE: Problem with screen saver

Agreed Jon but there's no harm in trying. If the worst comes to the worst then it could be time to roll out combofix

11 Aug @ 23:54

RE: Problem with screen saver

Hi Daniel, If you right-click on any blank part of the screen and choose 'properties' you will be able to turn off the screen saver from there.

RE: no screen display on mac

Try also resetting the PRAM 1. Shut down the computer. 2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4. 3. Turn on the computer. 4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears. 5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time. 6. Release the keys.

RE: my laptop is crashing! Blue screen with white writing, help! boo!

Hi there Jo, The error message means this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314063 It is fixable but your probably looking at a couple of hours to do fault finding and repair. Please avoid PC World - they will more than likely simply scrub and reinstall and even then they can't as you have a dodgy copy of Windows. Put a request in through this website and you will have a better chance of it being repaired and you not losing all of your data (documents, photos etc).

RE: I am using Windows Vista Home Premium edition.

It is asking you to install the driver program for the usb drive and flash drive. Did you get any CD's with the devices? If so then put it into your cd drive and let windows search for the drivers on the CD. Or you can manually specify the driver location and point it to c:windowssystem32 and check the 'search subfolders' checkbox. From what I can find this seems to be a Vista bug.
