RE: 2 out of 3 usb ports not working.
Jon > confused with me? Thats got to be worrying.... *I* have problems remembering who I am at time, so I can't blame with others with the same problem ;-) Thanks for the 'heads up' on usbdeview, that's handy. The registry problem was one I considered when I answered, but ran into problems trying to explain how to fix it, finding and deleting the entries makes for a long, long answer but usbdeview solves it in one! Thank you. One of my customers calls that a 'constipated registry' - I like that description. Thanks for the welcome too.
RE: 2 out of 3 usb ports not working.
I not familiar with the particular Advent laptop, but I've never seen dummy ports on *any* laptop, I'd be 99.99% certain they were meant to be live. It's not impossible that this is a hardware problem and if it is; there's not much you can do other than get it repaired, however there are a couple of things you could try before coming to that conclusion: 1. Power down the laptop, take the battery out and leave it out for half an hour or so. Put it back & reboot & look to see if the ports work then. Taking the battery out of a laptop takes *all* of the power away and may just allow the ports to 'reset' and work. 2. You don't say what OS you're using but removing the USB devices in the device manager will force them to be reinstalled at next boot and you may then find they're working. The drivers for the USB ports will re-install automatically in most recent MS Windows systems so there's no worry about having CDs or separate driver disks to hand. Good luck!
