RE: someone puting an error message on my computer.

Jayne, if you mean "ac adapter is not acer adapter, please check adapter" (and you must surely mean that despite your inability to copy accurately) then this issue has already been discussed on another thread on this forum. Our considered opinion was that it happens when the socket into which you plug the DC jack from the adapter starts to work loose from the motherboard. This gives a poor electrical contact which the computer misinterprets as a 'wrong' adaptor.

You may be able to work around the problem by starting the computer running on battery then plugging in the adaptor when Windows has started. But if the problem gets worse you may find that you are no longer able to power the computer (or charge the battery) from the adaptor. If that happens then it's likely to be the computer that needs to be repaired, not the adapter.

Nonetheless, Jon, the only thing stopping s.r. from using the webcam to take still images (or movies) is lack of suitable software. And the reason it isn't there is because "Advent" don't see such software being worth the pound or so per computer that it would cost them.

It's pretty common these days for laptop webcams not to be bundled with any supporting software. And that's what you need; if it works with Skype then there is nothing fundamentally wrong. I did a Google search for webcam software and various free options were found. I have not used any of them myself so I cannot recommend one over another. Give it a try yourself.

i bought a advent laptop in October 2012, it has an in built webcam and it does work as have used it when skyping. however i cant actually use it unless i am skyping someone or on some sort of chat, so i cant adjust the setting or mess about taking photos with my friend (as you do), can anyone help me? i have followed a few instruction like opening device manager, and locating visual devices to activate the webcam, but, although i found the webcam it made no difference! would love to use it when ever, please help.

RE: police malware

Or if you want the full way to do it....

Boot into safe mode

Do a drive clean up to remove temp and other junk files

Follow this with a similar scan using CCleaner

Run "Autoruns", identify any rogue items and disable them

Unhide "hidden" files and delete any suspicious files or folders found by Autoruns

One by one go through the user profiles, Program Files, Program Data, Windows, and Windows System32 folders looking for, and deleting anything rogue

Run RKILL
This doesn't remove anything. It just stops current programs running in memory, giving a clear run at the machine

Run Hitman Pro and delete EVERYTHING it finds

Reboot to safe mode

Run RKILL again

If you have a 32-bit version of windows, run SmitFraudFix - options 2,3,5

Run Combofix

Reboot, back into safe mode

Run CCleaner again, this time the registry cleaner, Run this repeatedly until all errors are gone

Disable system restore

Reboot to safe mode, re-enable system restore.

If XP, run "Dial a Fix" - all options selected

If Vista or Win7 you may (if still problems) have to run a number of registry hacks to reassociate com, exe, bat, inf file extensions

Uninstall the antivirus software, reboot to normal mode and reinstall it, then update it.

If Windows XP, its worth scanning with Hijack This! and deleting anything left that looks untoward

Scan with Malwarebytes Antimalware (full scan)

Scan with Spybot S&D (full scan)

Schedule a boot time scan for your antivirus software, reboot and let the scan proceed. Normally you would want to delete everything it finds - but theres always a risk of a trashed boot sector if you still have traces of a rootkit

If the scan is clear, then the machine should now be safe to use. But as with any attempt at cleaning a PC, you cannot be certain unless you wipe and reformat it

Yes. It simply isn't necessary to use such measures if you can get System Restore to work. Not much malware runs in Safe Mode and even less in 'Repair Mode'.

RE: police malware

I find this malware is not usually very sophisticated and can easily be identified in a list of start-up items and thus turned off. Probably the easiest way to get rid of it is to boot into Safe Mode (or 'Repair mode' in Vista or later Windows versions) then run System Restore. System Restore is a very good means of dealing with malware because it also undoes any changes the malware may have made to your settings.

After that you can search for and remove any inactive residual files with the security software of your choice. Malwarebytes is pretty good.

RE: computer repair

Don't waste your time or money
I get daily e-mails from companies who do this in large volumes, and its clear there is no money in it. The margins are awful, you would have to offer a warranty with the machines (bad news on old machines), and to cap it all as a fair number of the parts will have to go as scrap you would have to register under the WEEE waste regulations and quite possibly require a controlled waste storage permit.
Put it into perspective - the new hard drives would be worth more than the machine

RE: computer repair

My advice is to research your market before you part with a single penny. I have just sold 5 PC's on eBay a week ago and averaged about 10 quid per item. A couple of them were blisteringly fast and all of them were perfectly good, just cluttering my workshop up. If your research indicates that you can offload enough PC's to make a living at 10 pounds per unit whilst buying in new hard drives and spending several hours on each one installing the OS & drivers then go ahead. If you don't want to add Windows licences to your costs then Open Source Linux OS's like Ubuntu or Mint are your only option.

Hi,
I am considering working for myself repairing ex office machines which usually come without hard drives and wondering what to do about an operating system after replacing with new hard drive.
As Windows Operating Systems are so expensive to buy I would make very little money on each machine so wondering how I can get over this problem.
Any advice would be gratefully received
