Problem with my 3 Dongle

Hi All,

Not sure what is wrong with my Dongle on the 3 network. When I put the USB Dongle into my HP laptop it works fine, installs the software and connects to the network fine. When I put it into my Toshiba Laptop it just spends ages trying to install drivers then just does not pick up the Dongle.

It used to work fine on there.
All other USB's work fine on the Toshiba, it is just this one.

Can anyone please help I am loosing the will to live trying to sort it.

Both laptops are running Vista 32bit.

Have you used the remove programs feature in Control Panel to remove the 3 software before you try to re-install? Sometimes if an installation fails then it can screw up further attempts to install (this means the installation software is badly written but such problems are not uncommon). Uninstalling the software first may fix it. Otherwise can you do a System Restore to before your first installation attempt? If not you are left with the tricky task of manually removing all references to the 3 software and hardware drivers.

Thank you for your help Alan. I did remove the software, but that has not helped. Then I tried a system restore and still no joy!

Any ideas on manually removing all the references at all?

Well look for and remove anything in the Program Files and Program Data folders, if that does not work look for references in the Registry (but be careful because editing the Registry can be risky). There may also be an .inf & .pnf file in the Windows inf folder that you will need to remove.

make sure you have the dongle unplugged when you uninstall the software. Once you've done that, restart the machine.
Then plug the dongle back in. PlugNplay and autorun should kick in an the software should load off the memory chip on the dongle. If it does not then there;s something wrong with the way autorun is setup on the machine
I've noticed several times with these things that if autorun does not launch the correct set of drivers to install then trying to install manually goes wrong. I always seem to end up with XP drivers on Vista or vice versa

If the dongle wont detect properly on one USB port try it on another

I had the same problem. Cured it though, I used a total uninstall program then rebooted and poped the dongle in. it reinstalled fine and its away no probs now.

Really a big thank you all your help, I have uninstalled and used a complete uninstal programme but still having the same issue. It seems whenever I put the dongle in, it seems to create a "virtual CD Drive" then it will do nothing. It will not re-instal the 3connect software or even let me on-line by connecting through the "connect to a network" When going on this way it just hanhs saying opening port.....
Any more ideas at all?

the "virtual drive" is actually a memory chip of the dongle which holds the software and drivers.
It SHOULD autoplay and run the software setup, but if the autoplay settings on your machine are damaged this may not happen. Equally possibly the data on the memory chip may be corrupt
Try exploring the "vistual drive" and look for a setup executable and try running that. It MAY work, but as I said before I've found it usually tries to install the wrong version. Try it anyway
If that fails, go to the 3 website and look for downloadable software and drivers. Must be there somewhere

Thanks for your help, looks like a microsoft update and conflicted with my dongle for some reason, I took off a hotfix and it is all working now. Really thanks for your help and support.

Was the hotfix to do with reducing the spread of viruses by preventing USB drives automatically running software when you insert them, by any chance?

Strangly enough it was a hot fix for windows imaging content, I believe!

Strange one that one. Not sure why that would conflict.

Wish it was a hotfix for the USB would of been easier to find!

Have you got the hotfix K... number? It something I'd like to take a further look at as this potentially could be a real pain if other machines get the same symptoms

Total Uninstaller can be found on the interent. Search around for it, it's a RECOMMENDED tool.

Hi Every one what a full on palava.The time it takes to boil a kettle and drink a cup a tea! Three days later and too much frustration at last im online but cant watch films or youtube because adobe flash wont upload or is being blocked ive turned this computer off ond on that many times im suggesting you bring the dongle with your lap top to 3shop and ask the staff to connect it,I have and im going back until its bloody sorted ! takin my hard earned for faulty things 3 days and nights thats what it should be called.

However if your problem is that the Adobe Flash player will not install properly, yes thats a well known issue caused by a failed update and the fix is offered on the Flash download page
However here is my simplification of it:

download and run this uninstaller program
Should clear out all the corrupt versions of flash
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player.exe

then go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and reinstall the program
Note you need to install once for Internet Explorer, and then if you use Firefox download and run it again from within Firefox

If that still does not fix it, either post back or read the rest of the Adobe support site as you my need to run a special tool - details ARE on the adobe support page

And by the way - we are not affiliated with 3, any other phone or ISP company,or any national supplier of cheap junk laptops

I have used my "3" dongle in my laptop now for a year on Vista with no problems. Recently I tried to use the dongle on my other computer on XP and it wont download. According to "3" Microsoft has now downloaded a version3 and the software is not compatible. The only way I can get the dongle to work is to use a wireless router £86. I have a wireless router from Tiscali. Will this work instead of me buying another.

Lynn, you seem to be thoroughly confused. There are two completely different types of wireless. There is the long range wireless used by mobile telephones and the three dongle which delivers broadband via the mobile telephone network. Then there is short range wireless used by a wireless router to transmit signals within your house. The operation of a 3 dongle has nothing to do with a wireless router and a problem with a 3 dongle cannot POSSIBLY be fixed by changing the wireless router you are using. I don't even see why you need a 3 dongle if you have a wireless router???

The 3 dongle is intended for use when you are away from your house or if you don't have a provider of broadband over the telephone lines like Tiscali. Lynn, if you just explain what you want to achieve we can try to tell you how to do it. It might be best to start again with a new question. They say ask a silly question, get a silly answer so I would not trust the answer 3 gave you because they may have misunderstood what you were trying to do.

the only way your dongle is "not compatbile" is if it does not have XP drivers on it - which as far as I am aware is not possible unless you've wiped the onboard memory chip. If you have, then you are going to have to download the drivers from the 3 website.
Note that 3's comments about Microsoft sound like the kind of garbage spouted by a salesman trying to hit his monthly bonus

Hi ive just been reading the problems with the 3 dongle and was wondering if anyone could help me i have a 3 dongle and use it in my toshiba laptop with vista but for some reason the laptop keeps turning itself off we have removed all the software for 3 and done a system restore on the laptop the laptop will stay on when the dongle isnt turned on but when it on the laptop turns off on its own the times can vary from 10 mins being on line to 4/5 hours sometimes longer.
Is this a common problem or are we doing something wrong and missing something.

very difficult to answer that, but I would suspect that either the USB ports or controller on the laptop is faulty, or else the dongle is faulty. It SOUNDS like a voltage stability issue, but its hard to be sure with the details you've given. Whatever the cause, its not related to the earlier questions

Thankyou for your reply we have restored the laptop back too the factory settings and installed the windows updates all 70 of them and the laptop kept turning itself off again so not sure now if its one of the updates thats causing the problem and not the dongle ...we are at a loose end with the laptop turning itself off all the time and only 3 weeks left on the 12month manafacturers guarantee do we take the laptop back incase any internal damage has been caused

You tell then it keeps switching off. You don't explain any more than that. Don't mention the dongle as that may be nothing to do with it. A fault is a fault, and the sooner you get the warranty team involved the better

A couple of further points
1) they will almost certainly request that you restore the machine to factory settings before agreeing any repair. This is to eliminate any software causes. Therefore its important you copy any important data (photos, letters etc) to an external drive or CD or DVD NOW, before its too late
2) I reckon theres a good chance this is going to need a new motherboard - in which case it will have to go to Germany for repair. You'll be without it for 1-2 weeks
But the important thing is to speak to them now - if you wait any longer its too late to claim on the warranty

When you say the laptop "turns itself off all the time", do you mean all the lights suddenly go off and the screen suddenly goes blank (as if it had suffered a complete loss of power)? If so, that is a classic symptom of overheating. Make sure the laptop is on a hard flat surface like a desk and not something soft like a couch or a carpet or even a lap (!) as these can lead to the air intake being blocked. If the problem continues (and whether or not I am right about the cause) you should definitely get the laptop fixed under warranty while you still can!

my dongle is really slow and i cnt get facebook up i can bet on 2 the pge 2 sign in facebook then thats it cnt go any futher plz help i luv my facebook.

Im having problems with my dongle on my Pc i reinstalled my computer to its new self, now it wont let me use the dongle to start up internet connection, the dongle starts to load up but a pop up says service pack 1 for windows xp etc....Anyone help with this issue i have tried everything to sort this out ??

I always hear alarm bells when people say they "reformatted" their computer. Could it be that you loaded a version of Windows XP prior to Service Pack 2 and have not updated it back to SP2 (indeed SP3 is the current service pack)?

I've been with 3 internet now for 13 months. When I turn my computer on with the 3 dongle inserted into the usb port the computer will not load up, it begins the starting up process then the computer, just stays at a black screen. Allow when I remove the dongle and turn my computer on it works perfect.

If I am to insert the dongle when I have the computer up and running, the computer gets slower and slower until it freezes within a minute.

I have tryed uninstalling the software and reinstalling it, using a diferent USB port and I have had my dongle replaced, but i am still expericencing the same problem.

If anyone has any ideas on what is wrong please help.

i'd hazard a guess at one of several options
1) the USB ports on the machine are going faulty - possibly power delivery issues
2) the memory chip on the dongle is faulty (possibly a by-product of (1)
3) incorrect boot sequence in the BIOS
4) virus/trojans which kick in when you plug the dongle in and attempt to connect to the internet

Could be any, all, or none of these. But it shows how hard it is to diagnose remotely

I went to see a computer today where the 3 dongle was not working. The 3 software would load but report no network. When I looked carefully I found that that dial-up network connection associated with 3 WAS SET TO USE THE BUILT-IN DIAL-UP MODEM!!! I uninstalled the 3 software AND deleted the 3 network connection. Once I restarted the computer and plugged the dongle back in it re-installed itself and worked perfectly.

I wonder if other people with 3 dongle issues could have the same problem. The computer sees the 3 dongle as a type of dial-up modem. If it has another built-in (narrowband) dial-up modem there is the potential to get confused about which to use, though heaven knows how this happens.

can anyone help me ive installed my 3 setting and thats all uploaded fine when i press to connect in then comes up with can u make sure your setting are correct and that u have installed propley ive tried everything it works fine on my laptop in just when i wanna use my computer any help i would be greatfull thanks

we've pretty much covered all we can say about "3" dongles earlier in the thread. If you go back and reread those post and reread the ideas there, you may get somewhere
However as a general comment
1) these so called "mobile boradband" dongles in general don't work anywhere as well as they are claimed
2) without knowing exact details of operating system / model of dongle / drivers used its impossible for us to give more specific information that we already have

If you call in one of our team for an on-site visit he/she MAY be able to resolve your problems, but nothing guaranteed

use revo uninstaller take it all off and start over.

Hi all, I have a 3 dongle (Huawei E122) and an Acer Laptop (Aspire 5520G) when I plug in the dongle and connect to the internet, after about 10 mins the mouse pad on the laptop gets very hot and it turns itself off. It only ever does this when the dongle is plugged in. Is the dongle causing my laptop to overheat? Thanks.

its more likely that the activity of connecting to the internet is making the CPU and graphics chip do more work and making the machine overheat
does it do it if you connect to a real internet connection rather than the G3 connection?

You may be able to cure this by getting someone to strip the machine down, clean it out and check the state of the cooling system. However its possible that the graphics chip may now be beyond repair

Hi Jon, thanks for the reply. No it doesn't do it when I connect to the internet at home or at work, only ever when I plug in the 3 dongle. I can actually feel the machine heat up as soon as I plug in the dongle. When it turns itself off, I unplug the dongle and leave it for 5 mins, then turn back on and it is fine.

then I can only assume either the dongle is faulty and causing some kind of rapid power drain, or the USB circuits on the motherboard are faulty
are you plugging the dongle directly into the PC? or using a USB hub? I've known faulty hubs to do this in the past due to them drawing too much current, eventually burning out the USB circuitry on the motherboard

I'm plugging it directly into the laptop. I use USB storage pens a lot and these work ok with no problems. Before 3 sent me this dongle I used to use the bigger white one with a lead, not sure what model it was and this didn't give any problems either.

then I'd be concerned that the dongle is defecttive and drawing too much current. Thats only a guess, but if I'm right then at some point the motherboard USB circuitry is going to fail

Hi, I have currently a windows lite installed on my Eee PC Asus with Windows Lite installed in it and I have also installed the software but the PC is not detecting the USB dongle, Its not even the signel problem, I have even re-installed the OS but nothing seems to work right, please can someone help me here....

try it with a real copy of windows - not windows lite. Theres probably some key files missing

Check the manual for your PC. On some ultra portable machines that I have seen, you can only use certain USB slots for certain things. e.g. a printer must be in one particular slot, memory sticks must only go in a different one. It seems that they did not implement the full USB interface on all ports.

My netbook is not connecting with my 3 dongle. It keeps registering a problem however it's connected and only recently I've had this problem. I tried several attempts both from windows messenger and it keeps mentioning firewall settings could be wrong. I don't know if adding a new security system onto my netbook has caused a problem because it was fine before this.

try uninstalling whatever you added and see if it works again

I recently had a problem with my laptop and had a "professional" do a system recover on it. So its all clean etc. But my 3 dongle wont install the software in order to let me connect to the internet. I plug it in and a little window comes up in the right hand corner to say its installed and ready to use, so i go to my computer and double click the drive and 3 doesnt load. Ive tried uninstalling my usb drivers and ive tried right click and auto-play.

It just will not download :(

by "system recover" I presume you mean its been restored to factory settings?
Did he them install the various windows service packs?
Those dongles are picky as to what they'll intall on: try updating Vista with Service Packs 1 & 2 and try again

I don't know who did your "System Recover" but I would not leave a client in the lurch as you seem to have been! I hate to resort to restoring a computer to its factory settings but if I cannot avoid it I always make sure it is then made fully up to date. If you use Windows Update you will need several attempts as you are not offered the Service Pack updates until everything else is dealt with.

I have now installed all the windows updates and the software still wont install.

when i right click the "easyconnectinstaller" a note saying "easyconnectinstaller.exe incorrect function"

I have 3 dongle works fine on the acer travelmate laptop on sp3.

When i insert the dongle into the pc, the dongle installs software etc etc... but when i try to logon to the 3 homepage to topup, i get the error "cannot find server"... but the 3 connect software is showing a live connection....some help would be much appreciated... before i throw this pile of junk out of my bedroom window...

Could be a connection that is live but so poor and slow as to be virtually useless - so the attempt to contact the server times out. Try to connect your dongle on the end of a USB extension cable so the large metal case of your PC doesn't block the signal.

Any ideas why I can connect no probs with a 3 dongle, but IE 6 won't work? I assume it is a setting. History. Old Fujitso Amilo running XP Pro SP2. £ dongle is running latest drivers.

Want to use dongle to complete upgrade after reinstall of SP1 from disc and then SP2 (no longer available from MS) via torrent download.

So I assume it is an IE setting somewhere. Have to use dongle or no internet connection. Do have another laptop (new Gateway) all working so I can use that to download stuff if you think necessary.

IE6 simply does not work properly because it does not comply with modern scripting protocols
Go to wwww.microsoft.com/downloads and get IE8 from there. Grab a copy of XP SP2 at the same time (it IS still available) - don't mess around with torrents

Of course Windows XP SP2 is still available from Microsoft! But it's a big download, better completed on a broadband land line than on a dongle where you pay a lot more per GByte. I'm surprised IE6 won't work; I know it's outdated but not that bad, surely?

This is a computer support forum. We might be able to help with issues to do with getting a 3 Dongle to work, although that is really the job of 3 Technical Support. We cannot offer any help with contractual issues, so there is no point in asking!

I have have a problerm with a 3 dongle, that hopefully someone will be able to assist with, when I connect it, it installs fine and i can use it, when i reboot the PC the device will not load, if i look in the device manager, it appears in the USB devices with a yellow exclamation mark,, i have to uninstall it and then re-install it to work, any ideas as to why this is happening?

why is that when i goto top my 3 pay as you go dongle do i find that it says sorry can not top up.this is getting to be a pain, please can you explain why this is?

Hi all, I have a dongle problem. I have vista basic installed on a compaq pc. I can't get my dongle to work. I've uninstalled the dongle, cleaned the registry. When I plug the dongle in, it loads the software. But when I double click the software, I have nothing. It doesn't even open up the 3click software to click connect. Any ideas? I've turned the firewall off, turned the antivirus off. And still the same problem. I rang three, they told me to uninstall/reinstall then ring compaq. Has anyone got any ideas as to what may be the cause?

But I'd guess at a faulty dongle. At the end of he day, its up to "3" to get this working

kids got a toshiba satelite pro laptop as home access grant deal.Can't connect to internet,put dongle in etc but we get error 619 keep coming up

I can connect when at work using my 3 dongle, however i do not need to use my dongle at home as i have a wireless connection. I am unable to use this though after installing 3 dongle. My home connection connects breifly then only has limited access. I can still use the dongle at home, but would prefer to connect and use my home network. I have restored my laptop and can use home connection then however after installing 3 dongle the problem persists. Do i have to go through process of system restore every time i want to connect to home network or is there a simple solution? Thanks

I think yoyu will find the machine is set to use a dial-up connection rather than a network connection
Go into the Control Panel, select "Internet Options", then "Connections" and finally select the option "Dial whenever a network conection is not present"

i am trying to install a 3 dongle but do not have software any ideas please

the dongle has a memory chip in it and acts like a USB pen drive. The software is on that memory chip

The software will usually start automatically when you plug in the dongle but this autostart feature may have been disabled on your computer. If it doesn't start automatically, browse for the program and start it manually. The start file is usually called setup.exe or similar.

hi,im replying to alan comment on 25 Jan @ 20:48 i did this and realised that my built in modem was opening with my 3 connect i uninstalled it all then reinstalled and it worked but when i shut down my computer at the end of the day, then turn it on again the problem comes back .which means every time i shut down the settings go back to my built in modem rather than using the zte modem automaticly it used to work fine and none of this happened untill i had to take my toshiba laptop back to factory settings a few weeks ago.. could there be a way of keeping the settings maybe ive tried everything plse help x

hi guys wondering if you can help using my 3 dongle with windows 7 its all been working fine upto 4 days ago i connect to internet and after about 5-10 minutes i cannot get a webpage it says disconnected yet my connect box still says connected so i have to close the box and relaunch it sometimes it will connect but when it doesnt connect i dont get the black bar under the dashboard of 3 connect i have tried system restore back 5 days but still no ideas any help would be appreciated many thanks

I had the same problem - called three and spent an hr and 20mins on the phone with no resolve.
I restores to factory settings but same problem - after some fiddling with the dongle and using the pc I think there are some connections faults as the dongle will work in a vertical oirt but not in a horizontal port (unless I support it)

never ever buy 3 dongle they are so bad its rediculoise

The "3" dongles are no better or worse than any of the other phone companies. They all come from the same small number of manufacturers. The simple fact is that "3" probably sell more dongles and so get more complaints, but the proportion of complaint to sale is probably the same
The reason why you see so many "3" problems on this forum is simply due to Google. The more who post questions here when they should be asking "3" (not us), the more Google highlights us.

I would not say that we cannot help with 3 dongle problems but "3" should be the first port of call for anyone experiencing a problem and if it turns out it's a hardware problem with the dongle then ultimately you will have to go back to "3". From the comments made on this forum I don't have the impression that "3" technical support is all that good but lots of other ISPs don't have the greatest front-line tech. support either.

it seems like 3 dongels are not much cop they dont work properly i signed for a 24months contract after being told by the 3shop i would have no signal problems. me being new to computers i believed him.WHAT A MUG. surley if your sold a product that does not do what you bought it for your can cancell your contract.i have sent emails to 3 but all i get is a message saying cant reply systems down .when i try downloading something thier is so much buffing its just awaste of time.after reading all these comments it seems like im in the same boat.

The truth is that all the 3G network suppliers do a pretty good job when their products are used as intended - i.e. for providing mobile e-mail and comms for salesmen and similar itinerants while travelling. They are intended as replacements for cabled broadband. They don't have the data capacity , and never will do. If anyone has problems with downloading using a 3G dongle, then the answer is simple: GET A REAL BROADBAND CONNECTION

I have had a few clients who were similarly "over-sold" dongles - not necessarily by "3". If you feel the "3" shop made claims for the dongle's performance that cannot be substantiated, take it back to the "3" shop.

I have heard some good Hints and Tips about 3 dongles on this thread!!! I have Had my 3 dongle for nearly 2years! I have had good and bad days with, Connection, Signal and Installation problems But! I have also had GOOD Connections, Signal and Correct Installation!! You have to Remember it is still Quite New Technology! I have recently ALSO had Problems with disconnection and reconnecting by itself! & Just the Last couple of days Actually UNINSTALLING AND REINSTALLING By Itself!!! But After The usual Cleanout and resetting! When Signal is best Usually at Night!!Alls fine! INCLUDING WATCHING TV ON BBCi player

my 3 g dongle is flashing and i cannot connect to the internet without it saying program not responding can u help plz

I assume you did the obvious thing and called the "3" Tech Support phone line?

I have had issues with my 3 dongle in the past, I'm online for about an hour, then suddenly have no connection even though the 3 dashboard says I'm connected and have a full signal.

I might be wrong here, but I would say that the 3 dongles don't work too well with Windows Vista, I say this because I had this problem whilst Vista was my OS, I then upgraded my laptop with Windows 7 and hardly had any connection problems for a full year... but recently I had to restore my laptop due to unrelated problems and I am now back to using Vista and the problems have started again.

Also, while I was using Vista the first time round, the connection was very poor and 'timed-out' every 5-10 minutes, I blame this on phone software I installed for my Sony Ericsson because as soon as I un-installed the software, the 3 dongle worked pretty well.. I think this is because the phone software has a modem that lets you plug your phone to your laptop to connect to the internet and there was some sort of conflicting issue between the software and dongle.

I have found that when you lose connection, right-click the taskbar internet icon, select 'disconnect from 3connect' and then it should automatically re-connect.. it's a pain but life is sometimes.

Hi. We are having the same problem. Its definately 3 network or something as its happened to hundreds in the few months. WE all get told the same thing by 3 they are working oin it? for months. It was absolutely fine before but its awful now.

It's all trial and error with these dongles, I've just un-installed Zonealarm firewall and the dongle has been running perfect for around 4 days now.
If you have a third-party firewall then I suggest you uninstall it, it's worth a try.
I'm not too sure what firewalls apart from Windows actually work well with 3.
Yes, 3 just spout off the same old rubbish to all their customers. I know when they are telling me to try this or try that, I know damn well it won't work as I've already tried it 50 times.

hi i can install my 3 dongle to another pc i have . i have tryed to install on my better pc but evey time i plug it in it starts to install then in get a message saying . there is a problem with install hardware . then another message comes up and say need to connect to the inter net to get the right software . but as i have no other inter net . i can not do that . any help pls as been trying for days now thx

You don't say what operating system the two machines have, but I would guess that they are different. There is software stored on the dongle, but it may not be the right version if you are on Vista, Win7 or Win 8. You need to get the later version of the software.

If you can install it on another machine, do that, and check the suppliers site for a version of the software that matches your "better" machine. Download that and copy it across using a memory stick or similar. Then it should be OK.

Read all comments. I used to have a Vodafone dongle with Acer laptop - never a problem. Never.
Now in a different place with a Toshiba laptop and a 3 dongle. I don't know who designed their software for this gadget but I don't think they are professionals. So many problems from topping-up to slowness, and many others - even trying to be your browser! Will make sure I am in a position next time I relocate not to have to need one. It only comes down to people and their perspective. After experiencing this software I wouldn't be bothered to contact them. It isn't criticism of 3 but as I say down to individuals everywhere and their individual intelligence. And you don't know who is who. All mixed up and faceless! Phew! Bye.
