Weird upload / download

Hi, I logged on this morning with my three dongle for about 10 minutes, and in that time it managed to upload and download 4gb of data! I have no idea what it was downloading / uploading. Any ideas? is this common?

windows update?
antivirus update?
other automatic update e.g. Adobe?
BBC Iplayer?
Filesharing program?
the possible list is large
You could be hacked by a trojan / mail bomber
