IE cannot display Web Page but firefox working fine

Hi, my laptop was all working fine, then yesterday IE came up with "canot display web page", and I have not been able to use IE since. Firefox works fine though. I am using Vista and also my gadgets will now not connect to the Web. Microsoft outlook works fine as well. So as far as I can see it is just IE and my gadgets. I have done a system restore, which my system just cannot do, I have disabled norton and still will not work, and taken off add-ons and not working. Started in Safe mode with no availe. So anyone can help would be most appricated. Thanks

RE: IE cannot display Web Page but firefox working fine

fire up Internet Explorer
go to tools > Internet Options
The "general" tab should open. Click on the button under "browsing history" which says delete and then delete the lot
Then go to the "adavanced" tab and click the "reset" button. Can you now browse OK?
Please report back what happens. If you can, you then need to the "programs" tab, and click the "manage addons" button. These will all be disabled, some (mainly the security addons) need re-enabling. Post back here which ones you have listed, and one of us will be able to tell you which is safe to re-enable

RE: IE cannot display Web Page but firefox working fine

is the machine running ZoneAlarm firewall?
If so, try temporarily disabling it. I had two machines this weekend where IE was blocked by the latest ZA update

RE: IE cannot display Web Page but firefox working fine

I do not have Alarm Zone on my Laptop.

I disabled both the Windows and Norton Firewalls but it still has not made a difference. Any further suggestions at all please?

RE: IE cannot display Web Page but firefox working fine

you have a repair facility within Vista, which you access through the F8 menu at startup. NOT the same as system restore, it supposedly checks for corrupt/missing files. Try that
only other suggestion would be to download the beta if IE8 and see if that improves things
Otherwise, without seeing the machine I'm stumped.
Anyone else got ideas?

You could try opening Internet Explorer with no add-ons (under All Programs - Accessories - System Tools). Then try to load a web page.

It sounds for all the world as if Norton, even when disabled, is blocking internet access to IE.

Rob - Try uninstalling Norton rather than just disabling it and let us know what happens.

I'm willing to place a wee bet on this one......!

RE: IE cannot display Web Page but firefox working fine

My twopennorth says it is a virus.

Uninstall Norton. (In my experience it simply doesn't work.) Download SuperAntiSpyware Pro trial - for free - and run the scan.

Then download another anti-virus programme - such as AVG or Avira, which are free - and run them.

However, if the virus is now resident they may not pick it up. In that case you need to remove the hard drive in order to scan it on a known clean PC. That may be the time to call someone in.

RE: IE cannot display Web Page but firefox working fine

It is displaying symptoms of incorrect IE connections settings. Go to tools>connections>LAN settings and make sure there are no boxes ticked?

Thank you so much for the last post there was a tick box on the Lan settings. I have taken this off and it all seems to be working fine now. Thank you all for your help and advice.

RE: IE cannot display Web Page but firefox working fine

Which box on the LAN settings was ticked? Was it Proxy? There has been a virus which not only infected PC's but also installed a program called Tiny Proxy. This redirected your web surfing to their chosen sites.

Most of the AV programs detected and killed the virus, but did not clean up the proxy settings. Look in C:Program Files for a folder called Tiny proxy. If it is there, go to Control Panel/Add/remove programs and uninstall Tiny.
