slow broadband
Further to my ealier question I thought it may help if you knew what equipment I am using.
I have a Time computer model No 00378MF22G4 and I am running windows XP. I have a broadband modem from Talk Talk and that is connected by a LAN cable. I hope this info helps. Regards Steve

RE: slow broadband
It could be a lot of things. Firstly check your filters. There should be an ADSL filter fitted to every phone socket that is in use. NOT JUST the one your modem/router uses! You can measure your actual download speed at a site like http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/ You might have a faulty filter so temporarily disconnect all telephones, sky boxes, fax machines etc. and see if that improves the speed. If so, reconnect one at a time and remeasure the speed until you find the one that causes the problem. If not try a different filter on the modem to make sure that does not make a difference.
If that doesn't work post back and we'll move on to stage 2! Try to keep your replies on this same thread or it gets confusing.

RE: slow broadband
There are, I'm afraid, too many unknowns with this sort of problem to do a proper diagnosis on a forum. It could be that, despite what they say, Talk Talk have messed up the settings for your line, the line card in the exchange could be faulty, your telephone line could have become noisy, your modem could have developed a fault or your PC itself could have a hardware or software problem - from your description it's more likely to be software. I'm assuming that all other things work properly on the PC - if not, would you please describe what other problems you have with it. If it is only the download problem, then I'd suggest you request an estimate from one of our Service Providers to come out and fix it for you. Just click on the "Home" button then "Post your job" button.

RE: slow broadband
Yes, when dealing with this sort of problem for clients I always bring my own computer and my own modem because I know those are working properly.

RE: slow broadband
to be a bit Rumsfeldian, those are the known unknowns. There are also the unknown knowns to worry aboout i.e. are all the internet explorer plugins such as flash and java installed OK and up-to-date, and then theres the unknown unknowns: does the machine have a virus or trojan or similar? As David said, virtually impossible to diagnose via a forum

RE: slow broadband
Not impossible but very difficult if you cannot eliminate the possibility that the computer or modem/router is at fault. But perhaps Steve S. has access to another computer and router so could eliminate these factors?

RE: slow broadband
that site does not even have its won speedtest software: its been downloaded / copied from speedtest.net
Its a badly designed website that appears to have been thrown together in a hurry. I would regard it as a risky site to go to.
