Drivers for Time computers

I wish to install Windows XP Pro sp2 on my sister's Time computer but I don't have any drivers discs for this machine.
Could anyone tell me what I need to download please.
The sticker on the back of the machine says 0051BM03G4. I presume this is the model number.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Drivers for Time computers

should read 00515BM03G4

This has a Microstar MS-6777 motherboard - otherwise known as a K7N2GM-L. It uses an Nvidia chipset with Athlon CPU
Details and drivers are available from
http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&prod_no=547

Everything should be there, except the modem which is a Conexant based item. Windows should find a driver for that.
Note two points with this board
1) because its an Nvidia chipset, windows XP does not have its own driver for the ethernet port, so you'll need the chipset drivers on CD - you won't be able to install them online
3) this was one of the MSI boards that had a habit of exposing the weakness in the ATi 9200/9600 series graphics cards. There was a tendancy for those cards to develop a fault which made them boot to a black screen: this motherboard seemed to make that fault more likely to develop.
If you fit a graphics card I suggest you don't use an ATi one

Thankyou so much for this invaluable information. I've been searching in all the usual places, but Time have deliberately made it difficult so that you have to return the machine to them. I am forever in your debt.

RE: Drivers for Time computers

Time went bankrupt and were closed around four years ago (taking Tiny with them for the second (or was it third?) time as well)
The current business is in the same building with the same owners, but has no - legal - connection or responsibility with/for the old companies You could argue there's a moral responsibility, but that has no place in law.

RE: Drivers for Time computers

sorry - what I should have added was that all the Time & Tiny support websites were pulled offline by their webhost - Supanet/Internexus - around three weeks before the Administrators walked in. Funny that when you consider that Time and Supanet had the same ultimate beneficial owners.

RE: Drivers for Time computers

00508 does not appear as a valid model on the database. Must be one that was not documented
However the FA gives it away
Thats a Socket A motherboard from FIC - the AM39L but actually sold under another name which makes it hard to track down
Motherboard manual at
ftp://ftp.fic.com.tw/motherboard/manual/socketa/am39l/am39l_a1_eng.pdf

It uses a Via KM400 chipset

Use the older Via chipset drivers at
http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/VIA_4in1_443v.zip

Display drivers from
http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/video/KN_KM400/KM400_16942416_XP_wIShld_logod.zip

Sounds a problem - accoring to the manual its supposedly a Via audio chip but I'm sure its actually either Realtek or C-Media. I can't remember which and its not documented. The generic Via audio drivers will probably work at
http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/vinyl_v700b.zip

Windows XP should install generic drivers that work OK for USB and ethernet,

This wasn't one of our better boards. If you don't match the FSB jumpers to the CPU speed correctly you WILL fry the board

G4 indicates it will have been preloaded with a hidden recovery image with Windows XP home. This can only be accessed using one of Time's reload/recovery CDs. You need version 6 or 7.2 of the CD - and will only work as long as the machine has the original hard drive, and the image has not been destroyed.

It would have had a Conexant HSF modem. Windows XP will install basic drivers for that, but if you have problems use these

RE: Drivers for Time computers

need the Time model number and/or product code to ID it properly
model number should read something like 1234-AB-567G8
product code would be something like 00123-444-5678
both should be on the makers plate on the back of the machine

Having said that, if it uses a KM266 chipset the "old" Via 4in1 drivers are the best
http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/VIA_4in1_443v.zip

Most Time Via KM boards used Realtek sound chips
Try the AC97 drivers at
http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=23&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

As for display, a KM266 had built-in low grade graphics which were disabled by fitting an AGP card. Yours has a ATi 9200. Most of those that Time supplied were made by Sparkle and were inherently faulty: they eventually overheated and booted to a black scree. If your shows any sign of that, replace it. ATi 9200 drivers come from
https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/6-11-pre-r300_xp-2k_dd_ccc_wdm_38185.exe

However all thats guesswork
Give me the model number and I can give you the motherboard ID and the maker's drivers page

RE: Drivers for Time computers

doing a bit more digging and the only motherboard that could be is the Albatron KM333Pro -(even though it only uses a KM266 chipset....)
Drivers for the motherboard are here
http://www.albatron.com.tw/English/product/mb/pro_detail.asp?rlink=Driver&no=144

I was correct on the Via 4in1, but the website says use the Via AC97 codecs supplied by Albatron, not the Realtek ones I linked to above. The board may really have a Realtek chip "disguised" as a Via one, but it looks like its best to use the Via drivers

Its a pretty obscure board, I'm not surprised you could not find it. They were reasonably reliable - unlike that ATi graphics card thats plugged into it

RE: Drivers for Time computers

remember I have an advantage - I have the Time & Tiny model breakdown databases
One thing I should have added earlier - those ATi9200 cards from Sparkle were purchased with NO production QC checks done. Time got them cheaper as a result, but had to take the risk when they started failing as Sparkle refused to warrant them. The 256mb ones were the worst ones - the 512mb were not so bad

RE: Drivers for Time computers

that model does not appear on the database! The Q models used a problematic motherboard from MSI - the MS-6191 which had an AMD Irongate chipset. Its a Slot A board and not all that stable. To be honest I didn't think any Q01 were sold - I thought the boards were all switched before delivery for a board with integrated graphics (would have been Nvidia TNT2)

Anyway, drivers for the MS-6191 are at
http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&prod_no=348

Anyway, that board came with Win98SE installed (thats the GB2 bit) and give the C suffix presumably branded as Colossus rather than Time? If so it could explain why the details are missing from the database
Drivers are available from the link:
AGP (northbridge)
INF driver (southbridge)
Creative ES1373 (sound)
You need all three
Modem was an early version of the PCTel chipset
try the generic drivers at
http://www.conexant.com/support/hsp_driverdownload.jsp
but no guarantees they'll work. Both PC-Tel and the company who made the modem have long since gone. Conexant bought the intellectual rights but did not continue the products

I said these board were problematic - there were all sorts of issues with memory and AGP timing
Also be warned that you may have a prototype CPU in there: AMD shipped Time several thousand Slot A Athlon Thunderbirds for test purposes prior to the main production run of Socket A chips. The fans used could not always keep the Thunderbirds cool enough
Final point - if this machine has a case fan fitted, make sure its pushing air the correct way: in at the front, out at the back. Our Evaluatiosn team insisted we fit the fans back to front and it caused a lot of overheating machines of this generation

RE: Drivers for Time computers

just wondering whether that C suffix means "Custom" rather than Colossus - which ahain would explain why its not documented. We did a fair number of custom builds around then
If so, all bets at to what the graphics card is are off. Q models normally had a Nvidia TNT2, but if it is a custom job anything could be in that one. In that generation of custom builds we used th full range of Voodoo cards, ATi Rarge 128 all-in-wonders, and even some Matrox e-series cards. You'll need to open it up to be certain

RE: Drivers for Time computers

that uses one of the Microstar MS-7061 variants. Allgedly it only had a MK266Pro chipset but the three entries on the MSI site are either 333 or 400
See
http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&prod_no=590
http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&prod_no=594
http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&prod_no=589

Its one of those boards, which are all nearly identical and all use the same drivers anyway - so use the download link from any of them

The only other driver needed is for the Conexant modem - and Windows Update should supply that.

The records show that machine only came with 256MB RAM -thats worth upgrading
As for S35 - no idea

It's not the speakers that need the drivers, it's the sound card or the sound chip on the motherboard. So you need to identify the model of the computer, or the make and model of the motherboard inside the computer.

RE: Drivers for Time computers

Rob
is it a Time computer? If so post the model number and I'll track down the correct drivers
model number should be on a makers plate on the back and read something like 123ABC4567G8
if you can't find the model number, I May be able to locate it from the product code of the PC - something like 123-999-456789
don't give me the serial number - I can't trace anything from that

even if its not from Time, still post the make/model and we may still be able to work it out

As Alan said, its the computer soundcard/chip which needs the drivers, not the speakers

RE: Drivers for Time computers

tricky one
Thats an Arima A520, and I can't find a home page for Arima at present
Its poorly documented by Time, but as far as I can tell it was a bit of a hybrid. The drivers I have found are
Sound - ADI/Soundmax
USB2 - NEC
Modem - Askey MDC - which appears to really be a Conexant HSF
Chipset - POSSIBLY Ali (guessing)
Graphics - ATi of some kind, don't know what - but the provided drivers were version 7.80_rc2_7034

Most, if not all those those should have adequate default drivers on Windows update

Now to the crux of your question
The wireless card is not specified in the Time documentation, nor is it on th driver CD. It was probably not sourced from Arima: it was almost certainly a third party part
Time list on Notebook Driver CD9 just one wireless driver set, but I don't know it they are the correct ones. Its an MSI card, the MS6804. I can't find anything with that name on the MSI site, so I've uploaded the file here to Rapidlink

the 00503AB07G4 used version 2.1 of the Albatron KM18G Pro motherboard
All the drivers you need should be available on that link
Basically its a Nvida nForce2 chipset. The LAN drivers will be integrated into the chipset driver.

theres a note in the model breakdown "do not load BIOS defaults". I don't know why - presumably something gets disabled, or maybe the graphics memory gets misconfigured. So if you have set the defaults, give the BIOS settings a good check

thats the correct link. Albatron's website is simply offline (again... its always been flakey)

instead get the unified driver from nVidia - its here
Its uunclear whether that driver includes graphics or not, however if it doesn't I think Windows XP should find a driver for it

Theres an overview of the board at AMDboard.com

The modem is a Conexant HSF item, and Windows update will install a driver for that

RE: Drivers for Time computers

Tracey - I nearly missed your post. It's never a good idea to tag a question onto the end of an existing old thread, theres a good chance it'll get overlooked

Anyway, to answer your question

That should have a motherboard from MSI: the
MS-6340M Ver5.0
Sound and video were integrated onto the motherboard and the drivers are available on that link. Basically its a VIA KM133A chipset with S3 Savage4 graphics. Sound is VIA VT1616 (and unusually it is actually a real VIA chip - rare for MSI)
One thing you may have a problem with is the modem. Thats listed as an Askey device with a PC-Tel chipset, otherwise known as an HSP modem. Both Askey and PC-Tel gave up on modems, and Conexant took over the design rights. They have a generic HSP driver listed here but theres no guarantee they will work. Try them, if they wont them simply remove or replace the modem. A new one will only cost around £12

A couple of comments about that machine
1) it came with a 40GB hard drive, it would make sense to upgrade that to something larger
2) it would make sense to increase the RAM - it only came with 512MB but you may have problems finding 133 DRAM now
3) those future cases overheated - partly because the production lines fitted the exhaust fans the wrong way round. They're supposed to draw air out: they're usually fitted to suck it in. Worth checking and reversing if thats the case in yours

RE: Drivers for Time computers

just a correction - the info for that board on the MSI site says it uses a Savage4 graphics, but the graphics driver provided is actually the older ProSavage - which makes more sense given its a Km133A chipset
The other point is VIA list two sound drivers for this: a VIA AC97 one and a Creative one. There were two variants on the board with one or the other. I am certain Time used the VIA chip version, but just be aware there is a slim chance you may have a board with a Creative CT5880 chip on it. Visual inspection would tell - if you knew where to look. Otherwise, try the VIA drivers first, if they don't work then uninstall and try the Creative ones

just bringing this back up the list as its got buried due to the age of the thread and otherwise brian m won't be able to see it.
To reiterate: I don't have access to the Time serial number analysis. All I can check against is the model number or product code, one of which (often both) will be on the makers plate on the back of the machine. If you give me that, I can help

RE: Drivers for Time computers

the records show that as having the VIA266 chpset version of the MSI MS-6787 motherboard, which means its eiher the
P4MAM-L or the
P4MAM-V
Both are listed as using the same VIA AC97 sound drivers - which can be downloaded from the pages I've linked to (along with the other drivers)

RE: Drivers for Time computers

00351 should be 00351MR01G4 not 00351m01g4
And we never put WinXP (G4) on the M01 board (which was the FIC PAG-2130 - a suprt socket 7 VIA design)

Assuming you've got it wrong, and its the MR motherboard which you have, then the system is based on the Microstar MS-6382E v3 KT333
The MS-6382 range appear to be OEM only boards that don't appear on the MSI website. However HP also used a KT266A variant - see http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=bph07352&lc=en

So, for motherboard chipset you'll need the standard OLD Via Hyperions at http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/VIA_4in1_443v.zip
I'm not sure what sound chip is in this, but the general purpose Via AC97 should work http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/vinyl_v700b.zip
If theres an ethernet port then let windows install a driver. Same with the modem
Finally, this was listed as fitted with an "nVidia MX420" graphics card. I assume this was really a Geforce 4 MX420. Windows XP will probably have an adequate driver for this, but if not try this

RE: Drivers for Time computers

20027FA94G4
that uses a FIC AM39L motherboard
Manual for it is at ftp://ftp.fic.com.tw/motherboard/manual/socketa/am39l/am39l_a1_eng.pdf
FIC actually sold this as the K7M-400. However trying to negotiate their FTP site for drivers is a nightmare (its actually up at the moment - its usually down...)

However it appears eMachines also used this board, and as they are equally undocumented some kind soul has listed this board on an unofficial eMachines support site at
http://www.e4allupgraders.info/dir1/motherboards/socketa/am39l_downloads.shtml

Drivers are listed there. The site also lists a number of BIOS updates - DON'T USE THOSE on a Time or Tiny machine, as then the Windows XP preactivation will fail

Following are alternative download sites

Chipset http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/VIA_4in1_443v.zip

KM400 Unichrome graphics http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/video/KN_KM400/KM400_16942416_XP_wIShld_logod.zip

Realtek AC97 audio drivers http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=23&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

Windows XP will put in a serviceable network driver: use that. Same with the modem

RE: Drivers for Time computers

PS - just for the record, the FCI driver respository is at ftp://ftp.fic.com.tw/ but its really not worth bothering with. It contains a series of ISO files, each holding a driver collection with no indication of which ISO you need for each motherboard

RE: Drivers for Time computers

Hi, my in-laws have a Time 571GB04G3, this has been working well, originally on ME then later on XP. Afer a recent issue, the hard drive was removed and upgraded to Vista on a different PC. The HD boot fine in the second machine but fails to boot in the Time PC. I thought that this was down to missing hardware drivers so attempeted a build of Vista from scratch with the HD in place, but it always fails and is aborted.
I have the driver CD (my in laws keep everything)but it is built in such a way that it scans for your model and hardware and tells you which drivers to load, but as my PC will not boot, I can't bring it up in order to run this. I'm looking for info so that I can manually attemt to load the drivers at build, but the list on the CD is so long, and I'm not sure which apply.

Thanks in advance

Val

RE: Drivers for Time computers

It is very unlikely that an old PC originally bought with Windows ME installed will be capable of running Vista. If as you say, Vista was installed while the hard drive was fitted in another PC and then tranferred to the original PC the of course all the drivers will be wrong. The Vista OS will virtually "wake up" in a totally strange environment where it cannot recognise any of the hardware surrounding it. If you want to continue to use such an old PC then you need to wipe the HDD and re-install XP.

RE: Drivers for Time computers

Thanks for your reply. The intention was to use XP but the files were backed up using windows easy transfer - we were unaware that although it backs up on XP you are unable to restore with it, hence the move to Vista, in order to recover the files.
Is there anyway to get the correct drivers loaded whilst the HD is in the other machine? and are you able to point out the relevant ones for that model? I do have the CD

RE: Drivers for Time computers

Windows Easy Transfer does not backup the files as such, it just copies them. However if the drive has now been "upgraded" to Vista, you wont be able to just switch it back. Do you have a second hard disk/USB stick or similar on which you could temporarily store the copied files. ( I assume these are photos, documents etc). If so, on the Vista machine, you could backup the photos, documents etc. Then swap the hard disk back to the Time machine and re-install XP. Once that is done, copy the photos etc back.

RE: Drivers for Time computers

I don't think you've got a chance of running Vista on that
Motherboard is a Gigabyte 7ZMMP v0.2, (or 7ZMM+) from memory thats an old VIA KM133 chipset which won't be supported in Vista. CPU is a 900MHz socket A Athlon, and its only got 128MB SDRAM. Even the modem is unsupported - its from PC-TEL who are long dead.
We had fun and games getting these to work in XP let alone Vista.....the graphics were totally unstable and caused a BSOD on boot until we found a kludge of how to set the shared memory up in the BIOS. The sound chip is a Creative Ensoniq CT5880 chip and won't work in Vista

Seriously, forget it: it really is not going to work

For interest the page for this motherboard family is at
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=1367#dl
the most recent drivers they offer are for Win2000

RE: Drivers for Time computers

Thank you for your reply.
The machine was running well on XP so I guess that I'll go back to that. You're correct about the orinial memory being 128MB but I added 2x 512 SDRAM to the spare slots a few years ago when I first upgraded to XP.
The broblem that I have now is how to back up their data, currently on vista (loads well on another PC) and restore it back to XP so that they can have their PC back (they don't really want a differnt onem as this one cost them a lot of money at the time they bought it, so they'd rather it back)

Any ideas of a vista to xp backup and restore program?

Val

RE: Drivers for Time computers

you're going to have to mount that drive as a slave in another PC (best to use a USB adaptor), read the data you need off it the other PC, then put the drive back in, reformat it completely and then reinstall from scratch. Nothing else is going to work
As for it "costing a lot of money". Its around 14 years old. Its underpowered, underspecified, slow and by modern standards decrepit. It won't play modern games, its an art getting it to play DVDs due the VIA graphics chip

Save yourself the pain and bin it. Its life expired

RE: Drivers for Time computers

I agree with all those sentiments Jon, but my in- laws like its styling and ergonomics (it's a very well made case), they don't play games on it, just only use it for google and some word docs - they keep it under a dust sheet :-)
It now has a slimline monitor and wireless keyboard, as wall as the memory upgrade and was happily running XP. 900Mhz was enough for them and that's what they want. Who am I to argue.

I am doing now the manual file dump that I was hoping not to have to do. Thanks for your advice.
