RE: Laptop intermittently switches off Vaio TX1
Over time the thermal compound that helps the transfer of heat from the CPU to the heatsink can dry out and become ineffective. If it's out of warranty like you say and provided you are comfortable with taking the machine apart yourself then it's worth removing the heatsink and the old thermal paste, cleaning the CPU dye and bottom of the heatsink with some isopropyl alcohol and re-applying fresh thermal paste. You will get both items from Maplin or the likes reasonably cheaply. I've sucessfully fixed a number of laptops with overheating issues by doing just this and it's a fairly simple (although maybe a bit daunting if you have never done it before) procedure.
