Nice post darren. Top advice. As a little foot note (i have seen this issue on many ocasions) sometimes its as simple as a loose molex power connector to the hard drive. Sometimes a little reseating or replacement of the sata/ide cables can also work wonders.

Have you checked the mixer settings?, Double click the sound icon on the right hand side of the taskbar. Is it "muted"? Are any of the channels muted? Just a thought.
